From Trier to Worms

Upon extricating ourselves from a rabbit hole stairwell in Cochem, next day we continued down the Mosel to Trier.

Our Trier B&B was the fabulous Berghotel Kockelsberg on a hill overlooking the city. Ursula Erdman and her staff give visitors a warm welcome.

Driving into the city centre, we dined facing the ancient Roman Porta Nigra city gate where I got into a conversation with 2 boys whose picture you'll find in an earlier post. When I said I was a photographer, they insisted on being photographed.

It was sunset as a couple of wine tasting events were closing down beside the Hauptmarkt while a large crowd continued to socialize in the open square. We admire the German penchant for restoring and renovating traditional architecture, imparting an appreciation of the past to modern city centres. It's a fine mix.

Next morning at Kockelsberg, the buffet breakfast was as outstanding as the view of the city.

En route to Worms, the medieval town of Meisenheim diverted our attention for a mid day walkabout, bubbly and cake. And no, that's not our car.

After being greeted appropriately by the resident feline (just behind Lis in the photo) , we checked in to the self-catering GÄSTEHAUS VILLA FLIEDNER - DAS KUTSCHERHAUS in the village of Monsheim, then drove into Worms for some evening sightseeing. We purchased a breakfast which Fliedner home owners Andrea and Benedict put in a picnic basket for next morning.

It was in Worms that Martin Luther faced church authorities in 1521 to respond to his heretical criticism of the Catholic Church. Although less dramatic, ice cream was the public response to the warm Saturday night we were there.
